This Day in History: Alice Walker

Today we celebrate the birthday of Alice Walker, born in 1944. This African American writer is best known for her novel The Color Purple, which was adapted into both a movie and theater production. She declares herself a feminist and even invented the term "womanist" -- a school of thought that defines the "perspectives and experiences of 'women of color'"

Visit the NCC Libraries to read novels and poems by Walker, and to locate analysis of her works (a selection of books is listed below). Another excellent source of information about African American writers and history is the "African American Experience" database, located on our web site under "Research Databases." The photo of Alice Walker featured here was provided by this database. For help with remote access, contact the reference librarians by phone at 610-861-5359 or by e-mail.
